The school garden is much more than a place to grow plants. At El Regato School, it is also a learning space where our students can discover where food comes from, learn to care for nature and understand the importance of making the most of the resources around us.

This week, our 2nd Primary students enjoyed a very special hamaiketako made with produce from our own school garden. What makes this experience even more meaningful is that these tomatoes and cucumbers have their own story: the students planted them last year, when they were in 1st Primary.

After harvesting the produce, they prepared and cut it and arranged it on trays to share during break time. This gave them the opportunity to enjoy a salad made with food they had watched grow and that is part of their own surroundings.

But the learning does not end when hamaiketako is over. The organic waste was taken back to the garden and placed in the compost bin, where it will eventually become compost that can be used to continue caring for and enriching our garden.

In this way, an everyday experience allows students to understand the food cycle and explore ideas such as healthy eating, local produce, caring for the environment and making good use of resources.

Because when we learn through experience and in close contact with nature, we discover that everything is connected: what we plant, what we care for, what we share and what we give back to the earth.
